Drupal, Shopify, WooCommerce or OpenCart: which platform to choose for an online store in Ukraine

Drupal, Shopify, WooCommerce or OpenCart: which platform to choose for an online store in Ukraine

Which Platform Should You Choose for Your Online Store?

Shopify offers a quick start with ready-made tools, WooCommerce integrates well with WordPress, and OpenCart is designed for traditional eCommerce. Drupal stands out when an online store needs to do more than sell products — it must also bring together complex processes, integrations, and evolve alongside the business.

However, the choice is not always obvious. The complexity of an online store depends less on the number of products it contains and more on how its operations are organized.

For example, a store with just 50 products might work with three warehouses, an ERP system, and separate dealer pricing. Meanwhile, a store with 100,000 products might follow a simple, standard sales model: one price per product, conventional shipping, and a typical shopping cart.

That is why, before choosing a platform, you should ask yourself: what does your store need to do today, and what new requirements might arise over the next few years?

Is Drupal Only for Large Projects? Not Necessarily

Because Drupal can support complex business logic, it is often associated with large portals and eCommerce projects. But that does not mean it is excessive for a small business.

You can launch a standard online store with a product catalog, shopping cart, and checkout on Drupal. When your business needs personalized pricing, multiple warehouses, B2B customer portals, or new integrations, you can extend the existing system instead of starting from scratch.

Drupal CMS offers ready-made templates and visual page-building tools to help you get started faster. Drupal Commerce, meanwhile, lets you customize product structures, pricing rules, and checkout workflows to match your company's specific processes.

This is one of Drupal's main advantages: you do not need to build a complex system from day one to retain the ability to expand it in the future.

Comparing Drupal, Shopify, WooCommerce, and OpenCart

Flexibility is not the only factor when choosing a platform. Some businesses prioritize launching quickly without having to manage hosting, while others want complete control over every stage of the sales process.

The table below highlights the key differences between these platforms, from launch speed to complex integrations, data management, and payment options in Ukraine. Actual capabilities depend on the platform version, subscription plan, extensions, and project architecture.

Why the Same “Yes” Does Not Mean the Same Choice

The table contains many similar answers: all four platforms can support online sales, connect to external services, and accommodate store growth. The difference lies in how much work a particular scenario requires, which extensions it depends on, and who controls future changes.

That is why it is easier to compare platforms by looking at specific situations.

Shopify — When Getting Started Quickly Is the Priority

Imagine a store with 30 products, one price per product, a standard shopping cart, and conventional shipping. It needs to launch quickly, perhaps just for a season or to test a new market niche.

Shopify has a clear advantage here. Essential sales tools are already available, and the platform handles much of the technical maintenance. If complex workflows are not on the roadmap, custom development may be an unnecessary expense.

An important consideration for payments in Ukraine

According to the official Shopify Payments supported countries list, Shopify Payments is not available to businesses registered in Ukraine. To accept card payments, businesses need to use an eligible third-party payment provider. The available options may differ for companies registered in other countries.

In addition to the payment provider's fees, Shopify may charge third-party transaction fees. Whether these fees apply and how much they cost depends on the subscription plan and payment method.

For a test store, this may be an acceptable trade-off. As sales grow, however, payment costs should be calculated in advance.

WooCommerce — When Your Company Already Uses WordPress

If your company's website, blog, and main content are built on WordPress, WooCommerce lets you add an online store within a familiar ecosystem. You retain control over the code, data, and hosting, while functionality can be expanded through plugins and custom development.

For high-traffic stores, however, other factors matter too: server infrastructure, architecture, code quality, and extension compatibility.

It is therefore worth determining in advance whether WooCommerce can support your specific business processes and whether all the required extensions can be maintained reliably.

OpenCart — When You Need a Traditional Online Store

OpenCart was designed specifically for eCommerce. Product catalogs, product options, orders, customers, and multiple storefronts are all standard use cases. Additional capabilities can be introduced through modules or custom development.

If your store follows a conventional sales model, OpenCart can be a practical choice.

However, if your website also needs customer portals, ERP integration, and an internal employee system, it is important to compare not just the number of available modules but also the complexity of maintaining the entire solution. This is where Drupal's advantages become more apparent.

Drupal — When Your Store Needs to Follow Your Company's Business Logic

Let's return to the store from our first example. It has relatively few products, but it operates several warehouses, offers different prices to dealers, and exchanges data with an ERP system. Later, the company wants to introduce a B2B portal, configure personalized terms, and change its order-processing workflow.

With Drupal, these requirements can be designed as parts of a single system, connecting the product catalog, user roles, pricing rules, orders, and integrations. This does not mean other platforms cannot support similar functionality. Drupal's advantage lies in the freedom to implement unconventional business logic without being tied to a predefined set of workflows.

Thanks to its open-source code, a company can choose its infrastructure and develop the solution with its own team or an external development partner. Naturally, this freedom requires qualified development and ongoing maintenance. But when business processes are complex or frequently change, this approach gives the company greater control over the store's evolution.

What If Your Catalog Contains 100,000 Products?

A large catalog alone does not make Drupal mandatory. If products are sold through a standard workflow and all necessary integrations are available in an existing solution, Shopify or another platform may work just as well.

Conversely, a complex catalog with personalized pricing, multiple legal entities, several warehouses, and a customized checkout process requires carefully planned architecture. Drupal provides more room for tailored solutions in such cases. The actual performance of any platform will depend not only on the CMS but also on the infrastructure and quality of implementation.

Platform Cost Is More Than the Initial Development Budget

Once you have compared functionality, the next question is: how much will the store cost not just today, but over the next few years?

You should calculate the total cost of ownership, including development, hosting, maintenance, updates, paid extensions, transaction fees, integrations, and future changes.

Drupal, WooCommerce, and OpenCart are open-source platforms without mandatory licensing fees for the CMS itself. However, development, servers, and ongoing support still cost money. Shopify operates on a subscription model, with potential additional expenses for apps, transaction fees, and customizations.

How to Compare Costs Over Three Years

At the beginning, Shopify often looks more affordable. A ready-made store can be launched faster and with a smaller initial budget. Drupal development typically requires a larger initial investment because the system is built around the company's specific needs.

But what happens if, after a year, the store needs personalized dealer pricing, multiple warehouses, a complex ERP integration, or custom order-processing logic?

In Shopify, some of these requirements can be addressed through apps and customizations. But if the platform's capabilities are no longer sufficient, the business may need to migrate to another system. That means additional costs for development, transferring products and orders, rebuilding integrations, and preserving SEO performance.

Drupal takes a different approach: you invest in a flexible foundation and gradually expand the store you have already built. You can add new features, connect services, and change business processes without necessarily migrating to another platform every time your requirements evolve.

A cheaper launch does not always mean lower overall costs. If a business plans to develop its online store significantly, Drupal may prove more cost-effective over three years, even with a higher initial development budget.

Five Questions to Help You Decide

To make this comparison practical, answer five questions before choosing a platform:

  1. How will the store operate? Will it follow a standard sales model, or will it need separate workflows for dealers, B2B customers, and different departments?
  2. Which systems need to be connected? CRM, ERP, warehouses, payments, shipping, analytics?
  3. Who will manage future changes? Will ready-made modules be sufficient, or do you need custom logic and control over the code?
  4. What is the budget for both launch and maintenance? What might the total costs look like over several years?
  5. What comes next? New sales channels, markets, user roles, or integrations?

The answers will help you determine where an off-the-shelf solution is sufficient and where deep customization genuinely justifies the investment.

So, Which Platform Should You Choose?

There is no universal answer. Compare the available capabilities, evaluate the costs, and consider your business requirements and the problems your store needs to solve. Most importantly, think not only about what you need today but also about how your business might change over the next few years.

The right platform should support future growth so that new requirements do not force you to start from scratch.
