Ethical interface: design that does not harm users

Ethical Design: How to Avoid “Dark Patterns” and Build User TrustModern web design has a powerful influence on user behavior. However, sometimes this influence is used for manipulation, leading to the use of so-called dark patterns — manipulative interfaces that force users to take actions they don’t want to. These practices may temporarily increase conversions, but in the long run, they damage trust and brand reputation.

What are dark patterns?

Dark patterns are interface elements that intentionally deceive or manipulate users into taking actions they did not intend to take. These can include unnoticeable subscriptions, hidden payments, forced subscriptions, or privacy manipulation. Such patterns often exploit users’ cognitive biases or inattention.

Examples of manipulative patterns

  • Confirmshaming: Using shame to coerce users into action, such as wording an opt-out button as "No, I don't want to save money."
  • Bait and switch: An offer that entices the user, but when clicked on, another, unexpected action occurs.
  • Roach motel: Easy to subscribe, but difficult to unsubscribe. For example, the "unsubscribe" button is hidden or hard to reach.
  • Sneak into basket: Unexpectedly adding a product to the cart during the purchase process without the user's explicit consent.
  • Hidden costs: Adding additional fees or costs at a later stage of the purchase that misleads the user about the real cost.

How to replace dark patterns with transparent solutions

  1. Clear and understandable communication: Use simple, transparent language without double-barreling or manipulation.
  2. Easy access to settings and opt-outs: Provide users with easy access to subscription settings and the ability to easily opt-out.
  3. Pricing Transparency: List all costs and fees at the initial stages of the purchase to avoid hidden costs.
  4. Ethical data use: Collect only the information you need and clearly communicate to users how their data will be used.
  5. User Support: Provide accessible and effective support to resolve user questions or issues.

Using manipulative patterns may lead to short-term benefits, but in the long run it damages user trust and brand reputation. Replacing dark patterns with transparent, ethical solutions helps build long-term and mutually beneficial relationships with users. Ethical design is not only about avoiding manipulation, but also about creating a positive experience for users.
